Orientation
to our site
The Tomás
Romay Initative is essencially the
work we do either as part of our
professional groups or in our practices.
Dr. Tomás Romay was a pioneer of Cuban
organized medicine bridging the XVIII and
XIX centuries.
The
Finlay
Institute is the result of our
clinical investigations and efforts to
provide public health back up to our
people. Cuban public health in the island
of Cuba, MINSAP, is in great manner under
the control of the political leaders of
the Revolution. Therefore, the Cubans who
fall off the Revolution are ill served or
not served at all by the MINSAP. While
most Cubans exiled from the Revolution
are residing in the United States, the
U.S. Public Health Service does not
recognize the Cubans in the U.S. in any
special form. Therefore, it is not unexpected that the
health aspects of the Cuban-American
community may need special attention from
groups such as ours. The Finaly Institute
is monitoring aspects of health of
Cuban-Americans and providing a forum for
clinical investigations that confirm and
enhance our understanding of health and
disease.
The
Nicolás
Gutiérrez Academy is the community
activists area, bioethics department, and historical aspect of our
Society. It is named after Dr. Nicolás
J. Gutiérrez who founded the real
Academia de Ciencias Físicas, Médicas y
Naturales de La Habana en 1861 and began
publishing the Annals of the Academy of
Sciences in Cuba in 1864.
The Albarran School of
Medicine and Surgery is essentially a
virtual medical school. It is used by our
members and our student members. The
school provides a forum for participants
all over the world to bring forth their
questions and points of view. Dr Joaquín
Albarran was born in Sagua La Grande,
Cuba and studied medicine in Barcelona,
Spain and later in Paris. He did all his
professional work outside of the island
of Cuba. Therefore, Albarrán presents a
historical medical figure that is a
complement to that of Dr. Carlos J.
Finlay. The latter studied medicine
abroad in the United States but did
essentially all his clinical work,
elegant epidemiology, careful clinical
experimentation, pioneering microbiology
of viruses, and effective public health
interventions in the island of Cuba.
