Axillary
abscess.
Cutaneous apocrine glands may
become obstructed, infected and result in folliculitis and
abscess formation. In ssome individuals these occurrences on a
repeated bases result in the syndrome of hidradenitis
suppurativa. The latter is a chronic, suppurative, cutaneous
illness that is difficult to treat.
Bacterial infection with streptococci,
staphylococci, and rareky coliforms has been documented.
Treatment involves local measures such as soaks with Epsom
salts, systemic anticbiotics and surgical incision and draimage.
Some advocate the use of topical clyndamycin (1 percent lotion
twice per day for three months) to prevent further occurrences.
