Axillary abscess.

Cutaneous apocrine glands may become obstructed, infected and result in folliculitis and abscess formation. In ssome individuals these occurrences on a repeated bases result in the syndrome of hidradenitis suppurativa. The latter is a  chronic, suppurative, cutaneous illness that is difficult to treat.

Bacterial infection with streptococci, staphylococci, and rareky coliforms has been documented. Treatment involves local measures such as soaks with Epsom salts, systemic anticbiotics and surgical incision and draimage. Some advocate the use of topical clyndamycin (1 percent lotion twice per day for three months) to prevent further occurrences.
