There seemed to be several crops of 1 to 2 mm
papular lesions in the scalp. A biopsy of a
representative lesion revealed a collection of
neutrophils and keratotic debris within the captured
follicular infundibulum. There was a deep
inflammatory infiltrate also. PAS stain revealed
fungal organisms, spores, morphologically consistent
with pytirosporum within the hair follicles. This
microscopic picture is characteristic of malassezia
folliculitis.
