In the central province of Ha Tinh, which has been hit by outbreaks of avian flu H5N1, [authorities] reported that 7 people had fallen sick with fever and flu symptoms after coming in contact with sick poultry.

However, tests at the Hanoi-based National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology showed they did not have the avian flu virus.

[As of 30 Jan 2010, there were reports of a number of cases (the actual number has not been specified) of people in the central province of Ha Tinh who developed pneumonia symptoms after having had contact with sick and dead birds (see prior PRO/MBDS posting Avian influenza, human MBDS region: Viet Nam (Ha Tinh), susp. The newswire above mentions 7 suspected human avian influenza cases in the central province of Ha Tinh. The tests for avian influenza A

(H5N1) in those 7 suspected cases showed negative results. While there is not a specific statement linking the above mentioned suspected cases with those ruled out according to the latest newswire, one supposes that so far, there have been no human avian influenza cases reported in Viet Nam in 2010, although avian influenza has recurred in several provinces in Viet Nam (see prior PRO/MBDS posting Avian influenza - MBDS region (05): Viet Nam 20100128.0300).
