The preferred route for nutrient administration is the alimentary, gastrointestinal tract. Diabetes can be managed effectively with insulin and/or oral agents. The standard central parenteral nutrition energy formulation is based on glucose, a carbohydrate. Solutions with an osmolality of greater than 900 mOsm should be given through a central large vein, in order to prevent chemical phlebitis and injury to the vascular endothelium.
